Millie was assigned a research project at school. She had to pick a person from history, write a report, and then recreate this person as a "bottle person". Millie picked Mae Jemison - the first black woman to travel in space. What a cool title to earn! Thanks for pioneering the way, Mae!

Spot on! John and I had to help a bit, since she's only in second grade. Good team effort tho!
Staying with the All-American theme, Sydney has been learning about presidents and money and all things Americana...such as bald eagles.
Momma got a new job! Sort of. A volunteer job. When we went to watch one of Millie's dance performances at a middle school basketball game in February, I thought to myself "I think I can help those basketball girls". This is only the second year for the school to have athletics, so it's all new programs and most of the girls had never even played before. I worked up the courage to talk to the coach and volunteer to help in whatever way I can. Now, two days a week, we stay after school to practice for a couple of hours. I am assistant coaching with the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls teams, and it has been so fun! I love basketball, and I'm happy to be involved with it again, since my playing days are over. The girls have been so good to stay with me and hang out on the bleachers, dribble around, or go outside on the playground. I'm happy it's working out so far!
Sometimes Syd has her own arts and crafts session during practice ;)
Twirl, girl, twirl
Milestone alert: Nana has a boyfriend! Actually, it's someone from our hometown. She and Tim recently reconnected, and everything else is history. I'm predicting a wedding in the future. ;)
Syd wore her dress-up shoes to dinner. Pick your battles with this one.
One last roller-skating meetup with the Cruiks before the nice Spring weather is here for good. Video: Limbo Queens
Ruh roh. Syd got a nice black eye on a neighbor's trampoline. She and Millie collided on accident, and we've been teasing Mills about beating up on her younger sister.
Fat Boy loves to balance on the edge of the tub
Millie brought this home and I feel like we could all use some self-talk to calm down every once in awhile...good life skills.
Jasper enjoys Millie's snuggly things while she's at schoolAs we were leaving for school one morning, we noticed him perched in the window like this and the girls couldn't quit laughing. He's just so easy to laugh at. Poor Lily never gets any press being the sweet one.
I bought dad Hozier concert tickets for his bday, which finally rolled around in April! A fun night hanging out, just the two of us.
JKK had the girls that night, so off to Steak-n-Shake they went. The next morning, dad and I drove to Mannford to have breakfast with my Papa. Unfortunately, he didn't wear his hearing aides, so there wasn't much conversation. But it was good to see him regardless. ;)
Heyyyy ladies in the cool leos...
It's that time of year! Party on the patio
classic syd - nurse's note reads: bit on popcorn and jaw hurt

"I want to be a teacher when I grow up and teachers do calendar." - Sydney
Girls Night Out for mommy means daddy gets to be the cool one and throw the girls in the truck at bedtime to go racing around the neighborhood, tracking down the ice cream truck they heard while bathing.
Impossibly small, but this is a pic from Millie's 2nd grade teacher. They have their chefs hats on because they were cooking up some fractions! (I added a blue arrow pointing to Mills)
The girls make the most beautiful fridge art. Syd's is the rainbow, of course. Millie's says You Can Be Anything. <3
I've found 100 of these notes from Syd all over the house the past month. She has no idea...
Syd's art from school
She made this lion too!
Millie's Diamond Dance Crew performance at Rise and Shine was fun!
Milestone alert: Millie's first sleepover at someone else's house! She slept over at Sage's, and all went well! She wasn't nervous at all about sleeping away from home. The night Millie was away on sleepover, JKK and I took Syd out on a date to Fast Lane! She picked the arcade, one ride, and dinner with us there as her activities. Syd ALWAYS gravitates to the claw games because she loves stuffed animals. She was super lucky this night, thank goodness! Quick story: While we were eating dinner, she said she needed to go to the bathroom. We let her go by herself because it is so close to the eating area, but after a minute, I went to check on her. She was no where to be seen in the girls bathroom and I almost panicked...until I called out for her in the boys bathroom and she came waltzing out like such a big girl. Ha!
Early the next morning, I took her to the amazeum for some craft time. This activity is called felting and was pretty cool! You use an upholstery needle to poke felt down into fabric. A little dangerous, but she was so good about watching her fingers. She's a natural crafter. ;)
Millie and Sage got to go to a tea party and basically had the time of their lives. Fancy dresses, makeup, fingernail painting, games, too many treats to count...

Our neighbor that the girls play with ALL the time is also named Sydney. She gave our Syd this sweet little note and made her day. <3
Syd's favorite Spring hat and her brand new bike - it has gears! Ready to hit the trails...
Millie loves her new bike also. It was time to get them bigger bikes and make them start riding alone, rather than on the co-pilot, on our family bike rides. It's been a great purchase because it has reignited their love of bike riding!
The girls and I met Nana for an afternoon at Crystal Bridges to see the superhero exhibit before it was gone!
Always a lovely way to spend the day
our brave girl
Syd was making us crack up
Spring weather is here! Yay!!
Millie wrote this cute little note for Syd that plays off of one of our fave books: Peanut Butter and Cupcake. She's so sweet to Syd.
Since the weather was perfect, I decided my first bike ride of the year should be to meet Millie's class at the Amazeum for a field trip. It couldn't have been a more glorious ride...on the way there. I enjoyed it so much and had a great time at the field trip, but when I got on to ride home, I realized I was riding into an awful headwind. It was one of the most miserable rides I've had, but I finished! I collapsed at home, gathered my strength, and went straight to basketball practice...and then moaned every time I had to move. Ha! Feeling old.Millie and Dilly (aka Dylan) - still besties
Dylan, Millie, Sage, Sophia
Spring allergies are killing us! The girls have had it awful this year. Syd was reading to us one night, and I look up to see this - very resourceful, Piddy!Syd's squad - she's asking for more stuffed animals for her bday
Time for Syd's field trip to War Eagle Cavern! We love this place. It's always a great field trip because the kids love being out in nature, and the gem panning is so rewarding! Syd got to help demonstrate this time. Video: Syd gem panning at War Eagle
Mrs. Elkinton's kindergarten class - I don't know how these teachers do it! It's a lot of kids to deal with every day. And some of them are a bit crazy. For example, Syd was telling me that one girl in her class smuggled a chicken leg bone back from the cafeteria and stowed it in her crayon box. *gasp* I can't even.
Meet Sandy. She picked this fox out at the gift shop.
Needs vs. Wants: Syd wrote I want a pet. I want an LOL doll. I want a leprechaun. Wait, what?!
Syd picked these glasses out of treasure box. When I picked her up from school, she put them on and said "every time I put these on today, I yelled FUNKY EYES and everyone laughed". And then she giggled. It was hilarious.
Kendyl won a blue ribbon in her district art show!!
Easter weekend, we got to keep Mimi all to ourselves. It also happened to be her birthday weekend! I was lucky enough to take her to lunch one day while the girls were at school. We met JKK at a cute little tea room and felt very fancy.
Syd put on Nana's reading glasses and looked too cute not to snap a pic!
Oh boy, Lily almost lost her life in this bathtub full of bleach water. We were cleaning the jets in the tub and left it in there for a few hours. The smell of bleach was so strong, it never occurred to me the cats would get anywhere near it. Until the girls are shouting that Lily is very wet for some reason. Sure enough, she had taken a plunge. She must've been curiously sniffing around the bubbles and slipped? I don't know, but that tub is deep and she's lucky she made it out. The bathroom was wet everywhere, so it seemed to be a struggle to get out. I'm so thankful I didn't walk in on a drowned cat!
Lily is officially down one of her nine lives.
There was also a scavenger hunt that Millie and Bradley WON! Okay, so technically their moms helped them, and I now realize what an advantage that was. But I wasn't about to let them take my phone and run around the neighborhood on their own! Next year we'll have to figure something better out, but in the meantime they are enjoying their title and huge chocolate bunny!
In keeping with tradition, the girls stayed at Nana's house so we headed out on the town with friends! Thank you Nana for giving us these nights out. ;)
The weather stayed gorgeous, and the Easter Bunny had even hidden eggs outside! Video: hunting eggs at Nana's
Syd loves decorating the eggs
Mimi sandwich!
Brunch and mimosas at Nana's with Tim and Mimi was delicious. Cheers!
We all went home and napped for a few hours - what an exhausting yet fun weekend!
Another field trip for Millie - this one to the Botanical Gardens. A bit rainy that day. I wasn't able to go to this time, but luckily another mom sent me some pics.
Dylan, Mills, Averie
Crazy hat day at school! We've been slowly re-doing Syd's room to get rid of her nursery stuff. We finally got some new art up on the walls, and it fits her so purrrfectly! (Miley Cyrus kitty, Dolly Parton kitty, Princess kitty, and Katy Perry kitty)
Crazy socks, clothes, hair day! Millie was super grumpy and Syd was super psyched!
The next day it was Syd's turn to be grumpy and Mills was in a good mood. Mornings can be interesting around here.
Late night book club golf cart rides in the spring are the best!
Since it was Earth Day (earlier in the week) and the kindergartners were learning about recycling, they were assigned to bring a recycled item as show and tell. These are Syd's fish made out of toilet paper rolls. I cut them and she painted them - so proud!Unfortunately she had a mean substitute that day who cancelled show and tell. So Syd didn't even get to show them off. I'd like to have a few words with that substitute.
Earth Day crown for the queen of arts and crafts
Millie performed in the second grade musical - she was a grey squirrel in the choir. It was a play about Arbor Day, and how one acorn can make a significant difference. Pretty cute. Kinda long. ;) Millie sang her little heart out though, which will give any parent goosebumps. I had a mom fail and somehow misunderstood the costume instructions and failed to send grey squirrel ears. So Millie was one of the only kids to not have ears. I felt terrible and she was a little sad about it. But she did great despite the mix-up. Cutest squirrel out there (see blue arrow)!
Grey Squirrel sighting! The mood was good for all since it was the last day before a week-long break.
Syd has the most expressive faces
JKK and I attended our first razorback baseball game with some of his coworkers. We really should invest in some razorback red.
Flashback to the doobie!Mom's Day Out! Amanda and I went to Tulsa to see one of her favorite book bloggers speak. Bookstores, shopping, and Queenies...the perfect day.
Then we sped home to meet our babies and baby daddies at our fave dinner patio. This weather makes everything better! Video: Fab Four at The Porch
Since the girls don't have school this week, we are having sunroom sleepovers every night! Wheeee! (If you zoom in on Millie's face, she looks grumpy in this pic because she wanted the other side of the bed. *sigh*)
I love you more, Syddles.
Sunday, we took our kids and our record player to a local brewery for the Fix-It Cafe. It's a little pop up shop that volunteers to fix small appliances and I've been dying to get my record player fixed. Anyhoo, the girls made themselves at home...
I about died when Syd took her houseshoes out of her backpack. What in the world?! Hahahaha, my kids love to be cozy. Video: races and houseshoes
Syd's really figuring out her style lately. I love it. This fanny pack really makes the outfit work.
Syd loves to read The Ninjabread Man book, and it happens to have a recipe in the back. After asking many times, I finally gave in...and we made ninjabread cookies!I had to dig out some old icing and sprinkles to decorate with, but the girls were so happy it didn't matter. Old, runny black icing from halloween? No problem.
Big girl bike is going well! She's been experimenting with gears and going up the big hill on our street.
High kick! Tongue out! Video: working on those cartwheels
Remember when I said my kids like to get cozy? Millie pulled out a blanket from her back pack at my dermatologist appt!
And this is how Syd gets cozy at the car dealership while waiting for my car to be fixed. Yeesh! Manners, girls.
After much deliberation, Syd decided to use her own money for an LOL hair goals doll. They come wrapped up so it's a surprise which one you get. Well Syd was blown away that she scored one of the rare ones!Rain, rain, go away...the afternoon started out innocently enough. We had some friends over to play, but then our phones started blowing up with tornado warnings.
It got so bad, we had to move to Emily's house to take shelter (their safe space is bigger than ours)!
Once the threat passed, we stayed for dinner and golf cart rides ;) What a way to end April - hope this isn't a bad sign, since May is usually the worst tornado-ridden month!
